Understanding R22 Refrigerant

R22, also known as HCFC-22 or chlorodifluoromethane, was a popular refrigerant used in air conditioning and refrigeration systems for many years.

Although effective, R22 belongs to a group of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) that contribute to ozone layer depletion. For this reason, its production and use are being phased out across the UK and EU.

Since January 2015 it has been illegal to import or supply R22 for servicing existing equipment. Systems that still rely on this refrigerant can no longer be topped up with virgin or recycled R22.

If your air conditioning unit runs on R22, now is the time to consider replacing or converting it. Modern alternatives such as R410A or R32 offer improved efficiency and comply with current environmental regulations.
